Shopping in Scalea

supermarkets and farmers’ markets

Scalea is a relatively developed resort. It offers a range of large supermarkets, including Mercatissimo, Spar, and MD. They are open Mon-Sat with a break during siesta. In addition, there are many smaller grocery shops and farmers’ stalls with fresh fruits and vegetables. These stalls are located in the city centre and are open from early morning until lunch, Mon-Fri.

There are several individual fishmongers (Pescheria), butchers (Macelleria), bread bakeries (Fornaio), patisseries (Pasticceria), and sandwich/panini shops (Paninoteca). These shops and cafes are usually open from Monday to Saturday, but bare in mind that 90% of shops in Scalea are closed on Wednesday after siesta.

fashion stores and flee market

Most of the shops with clothes and accessories can be found along the pedestrial street, in the centre of Scalea and on Corso Mediterraneo. Other homeware, fashion shops and florist are on the streets via Laura and via Fume Lao. From pharmacies to toystores and jewellery retailers, Scalea has it all!

The local flee market, popular amongs the locals and residents of neighbouring towns, is open every Monday before siesta next to the Spar supermarket. Here, you can find clothing, shoes and homeware at very reasonable prices.

Electric appliances can be purchased in 'Expert’, just off of Corso Mediterraneo, opposite the Torre Talao. Next door is one of the concenient Chinese shops that sell all sorts of useful and not so useful hosehold items at very low prices.

outlets

A branch of the internationally popular McArthurGlen designer outlet is relatively close to Scalea, in the city Casserta, featuring such designers as D&G, Valentino, Armani, Versace and many others. The outlet is about a 2.5 hours drive, which makes it an ideal day trip destination. You won’t be disappointed!

restaurants

It’s difficult to imagine a holiday without those lovely meals out. The most popular restaurants in town are La Playa (great seafood as well as meat dishes, pizza, closed on Mondays), Genova (pizzeria and great meat dishes, closed on Sundays), Ancor (seafood only, open 7 days a week), ViGri (business lunch menu, closed on Sunday). Please keep in mind that pizza is only served in the evenings, from 19:00. Generally, restaurants are open 13:00 — 14:30 and 18:30 — 23:00. The most popular restaurants in Scalea offer a 10% discount for those who have purchased a real estate with the real estate agency Scalea-Property.info’.

n.b. siesta

Don’t forget that the only thing the Italians love more (especially in the South) than a hearty meal is a nice nap to follow! The siesta is respected between the hours of 13:00 and 16:00, sometimes stretching to 17:00. Scalea is no exception to siesta, so don’t expect anything to be open during these hours, any day of the week.
